The garcinia evidence
With Dr. Oz’s track record, I wasn’t ready to simply accept his word for the wonders of Garcinia. I went to PubMed, where a hunt for hydroxycitric acid brought up 64 articles. Some were immaterial, and the relevant ones included a great deal of animal research and a smaller quantity of human studies with conflicting results.
Guinea pigs to a high cholesterol diet who were given a different Garcinia species (atriviridis) had a propensity to reduce lipid composition levels and fat deposition in the aorta. HCA caused congenital defects in rats. Yet another rat study showed it suppressed body fat accumulation but had been toxic to the testes.
Their study found a small, statistically significant difference in weight loss (1.75 pounds versus 0.88 kg, less than 2 pounds). How Can Garcinia Cambogia Work?
Studies on this topic either look at the fruit, garcinia cambogia, or a specific component within the fruit known as (-)-hydroxycitric acid (henceforth just HCA). Most dietary supplements assert that ‘great’ garcinia supplements require 60% HCA by weight reduction.
Studies on animals (mice and rats) tend to show the same effects. HCA alone or Garcinia cambogia with a sizable HCA content is able to decrease body weight pretty reliably. It reduces food intake and inhibits fat creation.
Researchers have also affirmed how HCA prevents fat creation.

We use mice and rats as study models because they aren’t just economical but they are pretty similar to people at the end of the day, however, ‘pretty similar’ implies that we do have our metabolic alterations. This is a major one.
Nonetheless, this isn’t to mention that garcinia and HCA are unsuccessful in humans. 1 study showed advantages to the lipid profile of obese girls and another time HCA marginally increased glycogen resynthesis following exercise. In addition, even if the selection of weight loss in the previously mentioned study was wider than the side of a barn it did suggest some weight reduction.
These impacts, however, are fairly much in line with almost any other fruit. If there are things in it which may be consumed then they could affect the body in some minor ways and that is just what the advantages of garcinia cambogia appear to be, minor.

Finally, there’s a known species difference between rodents and humans in regards to garcinia and HCA, and also the evidence on HCA is quite unconvincing and strangely scarce given the prevalence of the fruit.
So, the bottom line is that garcinia cambogia can help mice and rats eliminate weight, but it doesn’t appear to work well (if at all) for individuals.
At this point, I really don’t believe we can reliably state whether Garcinia includes a clinically relevant benefit over simple calorie reduction and exercise. It appears to be secure, and it might have a role in helping patients lose weight by helping motivation and enlisting placebo effects.
Dr. Oz’s prevalence is lasting, however, diet fads aren’t. I confidently anticipate another “miracle” to supplant Garcinia at the Land of Oz in the long run.
