The garcinia evidence
Together with Dr. Oz’s track record, I wasn’t willing to simply accept his word for those wonders of Garcinia. I went to PubMed, where a search for hydroxycitric acid attracted up 64 articles. Some were irrelevant, and the relevant ones contained a great deal of animal studies and a smaller quantity of human studies with conflicting results.
Guinea pigs on a high cholesterol diet that were given a different Garcinia species (atriviridis) had a propensity to decrease lipid composition levels and fat deposition in the aorta. HCA caused congenital defects in rats. Another rat study found that it decreased body weight gain and visceral fat accumulation by decreasing food intake but had no lasting beneficial impacts on hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia. Still another rat study showed that it suppressed body fat accumulation but was toxic to the testes.
Their study found a small, statistically significant difference in weight reduction (1.75 kg vs 0.88 kg, less than two pounds). They remarked that the studies have had methodological flaws, so these results could be on account of GIGO (garbage in/garbage outside). The 2 studies using the best methodology found no statistically significant difference from placebo. Adverse events were frequent with Garcinia (headache, nausea, upper respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms).
Oz featured a patient testimonial on the series from a girl who’d lost 10 pounds in 4 weeks. She had no side effects. Says she had been at a plateau and desired a jump-start.
How Does Garcinia Cambogia Work?
Most dietary supplements assert that ‘good’ garcinia supplements require 60% HCA by weight.
Studies on animals (rats and mice) tend to all show the exact consequences. HCA by itself or Garcinia cambogia with a large HCA material can reduce body weight fairly faithfully. It reduces food intake and suppresses fat creation.
Researchers have also affirmed how HCA prevents fat creation.

1 failure to show any effects, yet another failure, and yet another study where there wasn’t any impact on appetite and the impact on weight loss was present but all over the map, with the placebo group shedding 2.4+/-2.9 kg while the garcinia group lost 3.7 +/- 3.1 kg after 12 months.

Wait, if it reliably and potently prevents obesity in mice and rats then why isn’t it working for us?
Simple answer, we’re humans.
When rats eat foods that they quite readily gain body fat, irrespective of whether it’s carbs or fats, so the process of producing said fat is really important; when it is inhibited then the consequences can be drastic.
When people eat food, however, we have a tendency to store fat and keep glucose as glucose. We can nevertheless create fat out of nonfat sources of course but the procedure is much more restricted than in rats. It is more of a crisis button than the norm.
We use rats and mice as research models since they aren’t only economical but they’re pretty similar to people in the end of the day, but ‘pretty similar’ implies that we do still have our metabolic differences. This is a significant one.
Nonetheless, this is not to mention that garcinia and HCA are outright unsuccessful in humans. If someone creates a trial based on garcinia paired with a dietary fiber which reveals benefit all we could say is, “Seems garcinia along with the fiber show benefit together”; we cannot backtrack and use this proof for garcinia working alone, however.
To use an analogy; if nutmeg and eggnog taste great together you can’t immediately produce the conclusion a face full of nutmeg is going to taste just as great.
Finally, there is a known species difference between humans and rodents when it comes to garcinia and HCA, and the evidence on HCA is very unconvincing and oddly scarce given the popularity of this fruit.
So, the most important thing is that garcinia cambogia helps rats and mice eliminate weight, but it does not appear to work well (if at all) for people.
At this point, I don’t believe we can reliably state if Garcinia includes a clinically relevant advantage over simple calorie reduction and exercise. It appears to be secure, and it may have a role in helping patients eliminate weight by helping motivation and enlisting placebo effects.
Dr. Oz’s popularity is enduring, however, diet fads aren’t. I expect another “miracle” to supplant Garcinia in the Land of Oz at the not-too-distant future.
