An independent evaluation found that some brands contain far less active ingredient than promised. Consumers are advised to look for at least 50% GCE with potassium but with no fillers, binders, or synthetic ingredients.
It should be taken on empty stomach 30-60 minutes before a meal. Outcomes increase with dosage, but doses over 3 000 mg per day should be cleared with your physician.
Dr. Oz recommends
(Some experts believe the potassium salt is more powerful than other formulations.) He says not to take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, since it can worsen dementia. The garcinia proof
Together with Dr. Oz’s track record, I wasn’t ready to simply accept his sentence for those marvels of Garcinia. I went to PubMed, in which a search for hydroxycitric acid brought up 64 articles. Some were irrelevant, and the relevant ones included a great deal of animal studies and a smaller number of human studies with conflicting results.
Guinea pigs on a high cholesterol diet that were given another Garcinia species (atriviridis) had a tendency to decrease lipid composition degrees and fat deposition in the aorta. HCA caused congenital defects in rats. Yet another rat study revealed that it suppressed body fat accumulation but had been toxic to the testes.
To try to make sense of the inconsistent results, Onakpoya et al. did a systematic review of the published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) at 2011. They commented that the studies have had methodological weaknesses, so these results could be due to GIGO (garbage in/garbage out). The 2 studies using the best methodology saw no statistically significant difference from placebo. Adverse events were common with Garcinia (headache, nausea, upper respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders).
Oz featured a patient lien to the show from a girl who had lost 10 lbs in 4 weeks. She began noticing results following a week; she noted her sugar cravings were decreased, she had more energy, and then she moved down a dress size from 10 to 8. Says she had been at a plateau and wanted a jump-start.
How Can Garcinia Cambogia Work?
Most dietary supplements assert that ‘good’ garcinia supplements need 60% HCA by weight.
Studies on animals (rats and mice) tend to show the same effects. HCA alone or Garcinia cambogia with a sizable HCA material can reduce body weight fairly faithfully. It reduces food intake and suppresses fat creation.
Researchers have also affirmed how HCA prevents fat creation.
There is a process known as de novo lipogenesis (creation of fat from nonfat sources like carbohydrate) where a very important enzyme, ATP citrate lysase, is blocked by HCA hence preventing the process from continuing.
The potency of the effects are amazing as well, as those studies just linked suggest that garcinia cambogia ingestion stopped the majority of weight gain in rats vulnerable to diet-induced obesity.
Wow, with such potency of course it’d subsequently get tested in people, right?

One failure to show some effects, another failure, and one study where there wasn’t any effect on hunger and the effect on weight loss was current but throughout the map, with the placebo group shedding 2.4+/-2.9 kg while the garcinia group lost 3.7 +/- 3.1 kg after 12 weeks.
The +/- signal can be read as ‘give or take’, demonstrating variance, meaning some folks taking garcinia cambogia lost as small as 0.6 kg and a few in the placebo group lost up of 5.3 pound.
Wait if it reliably and potently prevents obesity in rats and mice then why is not it working for us?
Simple answer, we’re humans.
When rats eat foods that they quite easily acquire body fat, irrespective of whether it’s carbohydrates or fats, so the process of creating said fat is really significant; when it’s inhibited then the effects can be drastic.
When people eat food, however, we have a tendency to store fat as fat and store sugar as glucose. We can nevertheless create fat out of nonfat resources naturally but the process is a lot more limited than in rats. It is more of a crisis button than the norm.
We use mice and rats as research models since they aren’t just economical but they are quite much like humans at the end of the day, but ‘fairly similar’ implies that we do still have our metabolic alterations. This is a major one.
However, this is not to mention that garcinia and HCA are ineffective in humans. One study demonstrated advantages to the lipid profile of obese girls and another time HCA marginally increased glycogen resynthesis following exercise. If someone makes a trial based on garcinia paired using a dietary fiber which shows benefit all we can say is, “Seems garcinia and the fiber reveal benefit together”; we can’t backtrack and use this as proof for garcinia working by itself, though.
To use an analogy; in case nutmeg and eggnog taste great together you can’t instantly produce the decision a face full of nutmeg is going to taste just as amazing.
Ultimately, there is a known species difference between humans and rodents in regards to garcinia and HCA, and the evidence on HCA is quite unconvincing and strangely scarce given the prevalence of this fruit.
So, the most important thing is that garcinia cambogia helps mice and rats lose weight, but it does not seem to work nicely (if at all) for individuals.
At this point, I really don’t think we can reliably state whether Garcinia has a clinically important benefit over easy calorie reduction and exercise. It seems to be safe, and it might have a part in helping patients lose weight by assisting motivation and enlisting placebo effects.
Dr. Oz’s prevalence is lasting, however, diet fads are not. I expect another “miracle” to supplant Garcinia in the Land of Oz at the not-too-distant future.
