With Dr. Oz’s track record, I wasn’t willing to just accept his sentence for the wonders of Garcinia. I went to PubMed, where a search for hydroxycitric acid attracted up 64 posts. Some were irrelevant, and the applicable ones included a great deal of animal research and a smaller number of human studies with conflicting results.
Guinea pigs on a high cholesterol diet that were given another Garcinia species (atriviridis) had a tendency to reduce lipid composition degrees and fat deposition in the aorta. HCA caused congenital defects in rats. Another rat study found that it decreased body weight gain and visceral fat accumulation by reducing food consumption but had no lasting beneficial effects on hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia. Yet another rat study revealed that it suppressed body fat accumulation but was toxic to the testes.
To attempt and create sense of their inconsistent outcomes, Onakpoya et al. did a systematic review of the published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as of 2011. There’s a process known as de novo lipogenesis (production of fat out of nonfat sources such as carbohydrate) where a very important enzyme, ATP citrate lysase, is blocked by HCA thereby preventing the process from continuing.
The effectiveness of these effects are incredible as well, as those studies simply linked suggest that garcinia cambogia intake stopped the vast majority of weight gain in rats prone to diet-induced obesity.

At this point, I really don’t believe we can reliably state if Garcinia has a clinically relevant benefit over simple calorie reduction and exercise. It appears to be secure, and it might have a part in helping patients lose weight by helping motivation and enlisting placebo effects.
Dr. Oz’s popularity is lasting, but diet fads are not. I confidently anticipate another “miracle” to supplant Garcinia in the Land of Oz at the not-too-distant future.
