The garcinia evidence
With Dr. Oz’s track record, I was not ready to just accept his sentence for the wonders of Garcinia. I went to PubMed, in which a hunt for hydroxycitric acid attracted up 64 articles. Some were irrelevant, and the applicable ones contained a lot of animal studies and a smaller number of human studies with inconsistent results.
Guinea pigs on a high cholesterol diet who were given a different Garcinia species (atriviridis) had a propensity to reduce lipid composition degrees and fat deposition in the aorta. Yet another rat study showed that it suppressed body fat accumulation but was toxic to the testes.

How Can Garcinia Cambogia Work?
Most dietary supplements assert that ‘great’ garcinia supplements require 60% HCA by weight.
Studies on animals (rats and mice) tend to all show the exact effects. HCA alone or Garcinia cambogia with a sizable HCA material is able to decrease body weight fairly reliably. It reduces food intake and suppresses fat creation.
Scientists have also affirmed how HCA prevents fat production.

One failure to show some effects, another collapse, and yet another study where there wasn’t any impact on appetite and the impact on weight loss was present but all over the map, together with the placebo group losing 2.4+/-2.9 kg while the garcinia group lost 3.7 +/- 3.1 kg after 12 months.

Wait, if it faithfully and potently prevents obesity in mice and rats then why isn’t it working for us?
Simple answer, we are humans.
When rats consume food they quite easily gain body fat, regardless of whether it’s carbs or fats, so the process of producing said fat is really significant; if it is inhibited then the effects can be extreme.
When humans eat food, but we tend to store fat as fat and store sugar as sugar. We can still create fat from nonfat sources naturally but the process is a lot more restricted than in rats. It’s more of a crisis button compared to the norm.
We use mice and rats as study models because they aren’t just cheap but they are quite similar to humans at the end of the day, but ‘fairly similar’ means that we do still have our metabolic differences. This is a major one.
However, this isn’t to mention that garcinia and HCA are outright ineffective in humans. 1 study showed benefits to the lipid profile of obese girls and yet another time HCA slightly increased glycogen resynthesis following exercise. Additionally, even if the selection of weight loss in the earlier mentioned research was broader than the side of a barn it did indicate some weight loss.
These impacts, however, are pretty much in line with almost any other fruit. If there are items in it which may be absorbed then they can affect the entire body in some minor ways and that is exactly what the advantages of garcinia cambogia appear to be, small.
One would think that future research would then double down and refocus their efforts on trying to truly figure out whether or not, as well as what magnitude, garcinia cambogia functions but instead we simply get trial after trial after trial after bloody trial of garcinia where it’s confused with other stuff.
This is important because we would like to understand how garcinia works. Not garcinia and merchandise X, just garcinia.

Ultimately, there is a known species difference between humans and rodents in regards to garcinia and HCA, and also the signs on HCA is quite unconvincing and strangely rare given the prevalence of this fruit.
So, the most important thing is that garcinia cambogia can help rats and mice lose weight, but it doesn’t appear to work nicely (if at all) for individuals.
At this point, I really don’t think we can reliably state if Garcinia has a clinically important benefit over easy calorie reduction and exercise. It seems to be safe, and it might have a part in helping patients lose weight by assisting motivation and enlisting placebo effects.
Dr. Oz’s popularity is enduring, however, diet fads are not. I expect another “miracle” to supplant Garcinia at the Land of Oz in the long run.
